Widget Studio

Widget Studio is where you build the board of cards on your dashboard: a gauge, a chart, a grid, a tile holding exactly the figure your morning meeting asks for.

Opening it

On the Dashboard, open Widget Studio view from the View menu on a group card's header. Dials on the board takes you back to the dial dashboard.

The board opens full-screen, over the rest of the app. Exit (Leave the full-screen board and go back to the app) returns you to the app; Fullscreen puts the board back over it.

The canvas

A widget is placed on a canvas rather than configured through a form. You place what you want, drag its corner to size it, and see it as it will appear.

The toolbar along the top:

ControlWhat it does
Add widgetAdds a widget to the canvas.
ResetPuts the board back to its default arrangement.
FitSpreads the widgets to fill this screen, and remembers its size so the board scales to fit whatever screen it is opened on next.
Lock / UnlockLocks the positions for viewing, or frees them for arranging.
ViewsYour saved boards: load, save, rename, overwrite, delete and share them.
Zoom out / % / Zoom inScales the whole board from 50% to 200%. Press the percentage to return to 100%. Arranging is locked while the zoom is not 100%.
3DSwitches between the flat skin and the 3D industrial skin.

Each widget has its own Fullscreen icon, which opens that widget on its own for a closer look, and Exit fullscreen to put it back. Configure widget, Change widget and Remove widget sit on each widget too.

The period badge on the board opens the period picker, to change the period every widget shows.

Form SubmissionAn entry on a form.

The Form Submission widget

It points at a form template, and remembers that choice on your own device. Its Show setting decides which entry it draws:

  • Newest submission, the latest entry filed;
  • A specific submission, one you pick;
  • Live, offered for a Dynamic Form, which shows the form's live standing.

Because the choice is kept on your device:

  • Your dashboard's widgets are yours. Somebody else's dashboard is configured separately.
  • If somebody deletes a form your widget points at, the widget says the form has been deleted, together with everything submitted with it, and clears its figures. There is nothing to fix: use Remove widget, or Configure widget to point it at another form.

See Deleting entries and templates.

Widgets update themselves

A widget showing live figures updates when the underlying data changes, without a refresh and without the card jumping.

Taking a figure off the board

A widget with figures to export carries the standard export menu in its title strip: Reading mode, Export to Excel, Export to PDF, Print on letterhead, Add to a report and Share via chat or email, against that widget's own figures. Add to a report drops them into the report composer as a table.

A retyped figure is one nobody can trace

The dashboard is the screen people leave open all day, so it is the one a figure most often has to leave. Export it rather than copying it by hand: the export carries the dating line and the filters with it, and a number typed into an email carries nothing.

Saving a board

Under Views, Save current as view keeps the arrangement under a name.

  • Show on all devices, off, keeps a board on the kind of screen it was arranged on: a phone layout stays on phones. On, it appears everywhere, however it was arranged.
  • A view is saved locked. It opens read-only for everyone, you included, and each person can unlock it on their own device.

A view somebody shared with you can be loaded and rearranged freely; your changes stay on your device.

Presenting a board

Boards can be drawn flat (2D) or industrial (3D) with the 3D button. It is a way of looking, not a different board.

Sending somebody a board

Open Sharing and link on a saved view under Views. One dialog answers the whole question, who gets to look at this board, in three parts.

Link to this board is the address that opens it. Copy it, or send it straight out by in-app chat or email.

A link is not a permission

Until the board is shared with somebody below, the link opens for nobody but you. Sending it to a colleague who is not on the list gets them a board they cannot see.

The link carries the way you are looking at the board (it says Opens in 2D or Opens in 3D), and whoever receives it can switch.

A board saved on this device only has no link

There is nothing on the server to address. Save it to the account first.

Who can see it

Private (only I can see this view) keeps a board to yourself. Otherwise choose the team members under Share with who may view and apply the layout.

The send action stays unavailable until the recipients are saved, because a link handed out before that opens for nobody.

Where it shows

Show on all devices works as it does when you save the view.

Save keeps the changes; Cancel leaves the sharing as it was.

Access

A widget shows only what you may see. Two people with the same widget on their dashboards see different figures if they are whitelisted on different tracker groups, and neither is wrong.

The same is true of a shared board: the link is an address, and what it draws is still filtered by what the person opening it is allowed to see.
